The Hobart Hurricanes are a prominent Australian Twenty20 cricket team based in Hobart, Tasmania, competing in the Big Bash League (BBL). Known for their vibrant purple uniforms, the team plays the majority of its home matches at Blundstone Arena in Hobart, with additional games held at the University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston.

The Hobart Hurricanes started with Allister de Winter as their first coach and Tim Paine as their inaugural captain. In their debut Big Bash League season of 2011/12, the Hurricanes had a strong beginning. They won their opening game at the WACA Ground against the Perth Scorchers, scoring 140 runs and dismissing the Scorchers for 109. Fast bowler Ben Hilfenhaus stood out in this match, earning a spot in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
In their second game, the Hurricanes defeated the favored Sydney Sixers by 42 runs at Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Rana Naved-ul-Hasan emerged as the leading wicket-taker of the 2011/12 Big Bash League season, claiming 15 wickets for the Hurricanes.
In the 2012–13 Big Bash League, the Hobart Hurricanes played 8 games, winning 4 and losing 4, which placed them 6th out of 8 teams. In the 2013–14 season, they advanced to the semi-finals by just 1 point over Brisbane Heat. They won the semi-final against the Melbourne Stars but were defeated by the Perth Scorchers in the final by 39 runs, finishing as runners-up, their best performance to date. Ben Dunk was named Man of the Tournament with 395 runs, and Jonathan Wells was recognized as the young gun of the tournament.
During the 2014–15 season, the Hurricanes won only 3 matches and finished 5th. In July 2018, they were invited as one of six teams to compete in the inaugural Abu Dhabi T20 Trophy, which was set to start in October 2018.
