The Melbourne Renegades are a professional Twenty20 cricket team based in Melbourne, Victoria. They compete in the Big Bash League (BBL), which is Australia’s premier Twenty20 cricket competition. The team has established itself as a key player in the league, contributing to the vibrant cricket scene in Melbourne.
For the 2023-2024 season, the Renegades are under the guidance of coach Cameron White, with Nic Maddinson serving as the captain. This leadership duo aims to drive the team to success and strengthen their performance in the highly competitive BBL.
After their 2018–19 championship win, the Melbourne Renegades saw changes in their coaching staff. Head coach Andrew McDonald left in October 2019, just before the 2019–20 Big Bash League season began. Michael Klinger, who had recently retired from playing, took over as coach in November 2019. Despite signing Pakistani players Usman Shinwari and Faheem Ashraf, both pulled out before the season started. They were replaced by English players Harry Gurney and Richard Gleeson. The Renegades faced challenges with injuries and form, finishing 8th but ended the season on a high note with a victory over the Brisbane Heat.
The 2020–21 season mirrored the previous one with more setbacks. Imran Tahir withdrew for personal reasons, James Pattinson was recalled to the national team, and Cameron Boyce missed out due to illness. Despite a strong start with a win against the Perth Scorchers, the Renegades struggled throughout the season, losing several matches heavily. However, young talents like Jake Fraser-McGurk and Mackenzie Harvey emerged. The team again finished 8th but with one more win compared to the previous season. Michael Klinger stepped down as head coach after the final match, and Aaron Finch resigned as captain, with Nic Maddinson taking over. The 2021–22 season saw no improvement in standings, with the Renegades finishing 8th for the third consecutive year. A standout moment was Cameron Boyce’s four-wicket haul in the final match against the Sydney Thunder.
In the 2017–18 Big Bash League season, the Melbourne Renegades revitalized their team by adding new players like Jack Wildermuth, Mohammad Nabi, Kieron Pollard, Tim Ludeman, Kane Richardson, and welcoming back Brad Hodge. This refreshed squad helped them qualify for the finals for the first time in five years. They finished 3rd on the table with 6 wins from 10 matches but were narrowly defeated by the Adelaide Strikers in the semi-final by just one run at Adelaide Oval.
The 2018–19 season saw the Renegades make key signings including Dan Christian, Cameron Boyce, Harry Gurney, and Usman Shinwari, following the retirements of Brad Hogg and Brad Hodge. They finished the regular season in second place and earned a home semi-final against the Sydney Sixers. Chasing 181 runs, they successfully reached the target with one ball to spare, thanks to crucial contributions from Dan Christian and Kane Richardson. In the final, they faced their cross-town rivals, the Melbourne Stars, who won the toss and chose to field. Despite being restricted to a modest total of 145, the Renegades defended their score dramatically. The Stars, needing 53 runs off the final 43 balls, collapsed to 7/112, handing the Renegades their first BBL title. Dan Christian was named Man of the Match for his crucial 38 runs and 2 wickets.
The Melbourne Renegades have a notable rivalry with the Melbourne Stars, both teams being Melbourne-based franchises in the Big Bash League (BBL). This rivalry is marked by fierce competition and high-stakes matches, as both teams vie for supremacy in the city. The Renegades and Stars face off in what is often termed the “Melbourne Derby,” a highlight of the BBL season. Their encounters are typically intense and closely contested, drawing significant attention from fans and media. This rivalry is fueled by the proximity of their home grounds, Marvel Stadium for the Renegades and the MCG for the Stars, adding an extra layer of local pride and competitive edge to their matchups.
