The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are a top Indian cricket team based in Tamil Nadu. They compete in the Indian Premier League (IPL), which they helped launch in 2008 as one of its original teams. CSK’s home ground is the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, owned by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited.
CSK is tied with the Mumbai Indians as the most successful IPL team, winning five titles each. They hold the record for reaching the IPL finals 10 times and making the playoffs 12 times in 15 seasons. The team also won the Champions League Twenty20 in 2010 and 2014. Ruturaj Gaikwad is the current captain, and Stephen Fleming is the coach.
In July 2015, CSK was suspended for two years due to its owners’ involvement in a betting scandal. However, it returned in 2018 and won the title in its comeback season. By January 2022, CSK became India’s first unicorn sports enterprise valued at $1.15 billion, making it the second most valuable IPL franchise.
Further Success and Transition (2021–Present)
During the 2021 IPL auctions, the Chennai Super Kings acquired Cheteshwar Pujara, Krishnappa Gowtham, and Moeen Ali and traded Robin Uthappa from Rajasthan Royals. The Super Kings started the season strong, winning five of their first seven matches. Still, the season was suspended midway due to rising COVID-19 cases. When the tournament resumed in the UAE, CSK finished second in the group stage and advanced to the playoffs. They defeated Delhi Capitals to reach the finals, winning their fourth IPL title by beating Kolkata Knight Riders.
For the 2022 IPL season, CSK announced Ravindra Jadeja as the new captain, replacing MS Dhoni. However, after a poor start, with the team losing six of their first eight matches, Jadeja handed the captaincy back to Dhoni on March 30, 2022. The Super Kings ended the season in ninth place, missing the playoffs for only the second time in their IPL history.
In the 2023 IPL auctions, CSK bought Ben Stokes, Kyle Jamieson, and Ajinkya Rahane. Dwayne Bravo retired but joined the team as the bowling coach, replacing Lakshmipathy Balaji. The season began with injuries to Deepak Chahar and Kyle Jamieson, and Stokes had to sit out much of the season. Despite these setbacks, CSK finished second in the group stage with 17 points. They won the qualifier against Gujarat Titans and made it to their tenth IPL final, where they secured their fifth title by defeating Gujarat Titans by five wickets.
For the 2024 season, CSK acquired Daryl Mitchell, Sameer Rizvi, Shardul Thakur, Mustafizur Rahman, and Rachin Ravindra. On March 21, 2024, Dhoni passed the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. The team had a mixed season, finishing fifth with 14 points after being tied with three other teams for the last playoff spot. They failed to qualify for the playoffs for the third time in their history.
Comeback (2018–20)
Before the 2018 IPL auction, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retained key players MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, and Ravindra Jadeja. They also brought back Faf du Plessis and Dwayne Bravo during the auction. As CSK returned to the IPL after a two-year suspension, excitement among fans was high, with many attending practice sessions at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
In their first match back, CSK secured a thrilling one-wicket victory against Mumbai Indians. They finished second in the league stage and advanced to the playoffs, where they defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the first qualifier and again in the final to win their third IPL title. Notably, CSK became the first team to beat the same opponent (Sunrisers Hyderabad) four times in a single season.
In the 2019 season, CSK finished second in the league stage with nine wins from 14 matches. They lost to Mumbai Indians in the first playoff match but bounced back by defeating Delhi Capitals to reach the final for a record eighth time. However, they narrowly lost the final to Mumbai by one run. Imran Tahir, a CSK bowler, won the Purple Cap for taking the most wickets that season with 26.
Ahead of the 2020 season, CSK acquired Sam Curran, Josh Hazlewood, and Piyush Chawla in the auction. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the IPL was postponed and later shifted to the UAE. Unfortunately, several CSK team members tested positive for the virus, and players like Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh withdrew for personal reasons. CSK started the season with a win against Mumbai Indians but struggled overall, finishing seventh in the group stage and missing the playoffs for the first time. Captain MS Dhoni faced criticism for his form and team selections, leading the franchise to release several players, including Piyush Chawla, Kedar Jadhav, and Murali Vijay, before the 2021 auction.
