Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are a renowned cricket franchise based in Kolkata, competing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, actress Juhi Chawla, and her husband Jay Mehta, KKR plays its home matches at the iconic Eden Gardens stadium.
The team first gained significant attention when they qualified for the IPL playoffs in 2011. Their breakthrough came in 2012 when they clinched the IPL title by defeating the Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling final. KKR repeated their success in 2014, overcoming Kings XI Punjab to secure their second championship. In 2024, they achieved their third IPL title by triumphing over Sunrisers Hyderabad. Additionally, KKR holds the record for the longest winning streak in IPL history with an impressive 14 consecutive victories.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ all-time leading run-scorer is Gautam Gambhir, who has been instrumental in the team’s success over the years. The record for most wickets is held by Sunil Narine, a key figure in their bowling lineup. The team’s official motto, “Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo” (we will perform, fight, and win!), reflects their competitive spirit. Their colors, purple and gold, symbolize their vibrant and dynamic presence in the IPL.
In 2007, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) launched the Indian Premier League (IPL), a new cricket tournament featuring the Twenty20 format. The inaugural IPL season took place from April to June 2008, with eight teams representing various Indian cities. These teams were auctioned in Mumbai on February 20, 2008. The Kolkata franchise was purchased by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s company, Red Chillies Entertainment, in collaboration with actress Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta, for $75.09 million, roughly ₹2.98 billion at the time. Sourav Ganguly, a former Indian national team captain and native of West Bengal, was appointed as the team’s Icon player. The team’s name, Kolkata Knight Riders, pays homage to the popular 1980s American TV series “Knight Rider.”
When the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) debuted in 2008, their logo featured a blazing golden Viking helmet against a black background, with the team’s name in gold beside it. In the third season, the background color was changed to purple. The current logo, introduced in 2012, showcases a blazing purple Corinthian helmet trimmed with gold, set within a shield bearing the team’s name.
Initially, the team’s tagline was “All the King’s Men” for the first four seasons, before it shifted to “New Dawn, New Knights” in the fifth season. The official colors were originally black and gold, symbolizing the spirit of life and the Goddess Kali, according to Shah Rukh Khan. However, these colors were updated to purple and gold in the third season, a scheme that has remained since. The jerseys were designed by Bollywood fashion icon Manish Malhotra.
The team’s anthem, “Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo Re” (we will act, fight, and win!), was composed by the musical duo Vishal–Shekhar. Additionally, a Knight Riders album featuring renowned artists like Usha Uthup and Bappi Lahiri was released, adding to the team’s vibrant cultural presence.
