Kolkata Knight Riders triumphed over Royal Challengers Bangalore in a thrilling last-over finish during Match 36 of TATA Indian Premier League at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. A solid batting performance, spearheaded by captain Shreyas Iyer’s 50 off 36 balls, combined with a solid collective effort in bowling and fielding, secured the victory for KKR against RCB.
Mitchell Starc showcased his composure in the final over, defending 21 runs as Phil Salt executed a brilliant athletic run-out off the last ball, sealing the win for KKR after Karn Sharma had caused a stir with three sixes in the final over.
Salt set the stage for KKR with a blistering 12-ball 48 after they opted to bat, while Shreyas Iyer guided the innings through the middle overs. Ramandeep Singh added the finishing touches with a rapid 9-ball 24, propelling KKR to a formidable total of 222/6 against RCB.
A collective solid bowling performance from Kolkata Knight Riders led to crucial breakthroughs by Andre Russell (3/25), Sunil Narine (2/34), and Harshit Rana (2/33), allowing Mitchell Starc to hold his nerve and defend 21 runs in the last over, securing the win for KKR against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Defending 223, KKR quickly dismissed RCB’s openers during the Powerplay. Harshit Rana provided the early breakthrough by catching and bowling Virat Kohli off a slower dipping full toss; Kohli reviewed the decision unsuccessfully after scoring 18 off seven balls, which included one four and two sixes. Captain Faf du Plessis followed soon after, dismissed by Venkatesh Iyer’s fantastic low diving catch off Varun Chakaravarthy. Despite this, Will Jacks kept the momentum going, blasting four sixes and three fours, including three massive sixes and a four off Starc in the sixth over, bringing RCB to 74/2 at the end of the Powerplay in the RCB vs KKR clash.
Kolkata Knight Riders introduced Suyash Sharma as their Impact Player, replacing Rinku Singh in the seventh over during the RCB vs KKR match. Will Jacks and Rajat Patidar kept the momentum going with aggressive batting, with Jacks reaching his fifty off just 29 balls, thanks to a six and a four off Varun Chakaravarthy. Together, the duo amassed 102 runs off only 48 balls.
Shreyas Iyer then brought Andre Russell into the attack. He was immediately impacted by dismissing the well-set Jacks (55 off 32) and Patidar (52 off 23) in the same over. Another bowling change yielded results as Sunil Narine took out both Green and Mahipal Lomror in the same over, reducing RCB to 155/6.
With 68 runs needed off 42 balls, Dinesh Karthik and Impact Player Suyash Prabhudessai joined forces to stabilize the innings, adding 32 runs together. However, the impressive Harshit Rana returned to dismiss Prabhudessai in the 18th over, delivering a brilliant over that conceded just six runs and leaving RCB needing 31 runs off 12 balls in this intense RCB vs KKR encounter.
Dinesh Karthik hit a six and a four off Andre Russell in the penultimate over. Still, Russell responded fiercely, delivering a pivotal moment by dismissing Karthik on the last ball. Karthik attempted a scoop shot but misjudged it, allowing the keeper to easily take the catch.
With 21 runs needed off six balls, a thrilling finish unfolded. Karn Sharma started strong, launching a flat six over backward point on the first ball. He edged the subsequent delivery, which didn’t carry to the keeper, then hit another over covers and followed up with another six over backward point, narrowing the equation to 3 runs needed off 2 balls. However, the drama intensified when Mitchell Starc executed a brilliant catch and bowled, sending back the aggressive Karn.
With 3 runs required off the final ball, Lockie Ferguson pushed the last delivery to deep cover and dashed for a risky two. Ramandeep’s throw from the deep was wide, but Phil Salt made an impressive dive to collect it and break the stumps just as Ferguson fell short. This sparked exuberant celebrations as KKR clinched a thrilling one-run victory.
Earlier, Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and elected to field.
Earlier in the match, Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and chose to field. Kolkata Knight Riders started strongly, with Phil Salt and Sunil Narine putting on 56 runs for the opening wicket. Salt took charge of the acceleration while Narine struggled to find his rhythm, even needing treatment from the physio after being hit on the toe by a yorker from Yash Dayal in the second over. Narine finally got off the mark with a slash over the cover fielder for a four on his eighth ball.
Salt shifted into high gear in the fourth over, welcoming Lockie Ferguson with two sixes and four fours, accumulating 28 runs in the over and racing to 48 off just 11 balls. Du Plessis persisted with Mohammed Siraj for a third over, which yielded a crucial breakthrough for RCB. Siraj’s clever, slower ball caught the aggressive Salt at deep mid-wicket. The situation worsened for KKR as another slower delivery from Dayal had Narine caught at long off, quickly turning the tide in RCB’s favor.
Two balls later, Cameron Green executed a spectacular one-handed catch at mid-wicket to dismiss Angkrish Raghuvanshi, leaving KKR at 75/3 by the end of the Powerplay.
Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer kept the scoreboard moving. Still, Green struck again, having Iyer caught at deep square leg against the run of play. The visitors briefly regained control until Rinku Singh ignited the innings with a massive six off Karn Sharma. He and Shreyas added 40 runs off 29 balls. However, Green also dropped a challenging caught and bowled chance from Shreyas.
Just as a promising partnership began to develop, Lockie Ferguson returned to claim the crucial wicket of Rinku Singh, caught at short fine leg off a slower short ball. The following delivery saw Andre Russell caught behind off a high full toss, but it was ruled a no-ball as it was deemed above waist height.
Ferguson made a strong comeback after conceding 28 runs in his first over, allowing just 11 runs in his subsequent two overs, which helped slow down KKR’s scoring. Andre Russell and Shreyas Iyer then shifted gears, plundering 22 runs off the 17th over from Yash Dayal, with Shreyas bringing up his fifty off 35 balls with a six and a four.
However, Shreyas soon departed, caught at long-off by Faf du Plessis off Cameron Green’s bowling. Ramandeep Singh immediately made an impact, smashing two sixes and a four off Mohammed Siraj in the penultimate over. He and Russell combined for three fours in the final over, helping KKR finish at 222/6. Ramandeep remained unbeaten on 24 off nine balls, while Russell ended his innings not out on 27 off 20 balls.
