Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) secured a four-wicket victory against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, marking LSG’s sixth win in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. In the LSG vs MI matchup, LSG won the toss and chose to bowl first, making several changes to their lineup. Ashton Turner, Naveen-ul-Haq, and Mayank Yadav were introduced to the team. At the same time, MI brought back Gerald Coetzee instead of Luke Wood. In this LSG vs MI encounter, the LSG bowlers delivered a strong performance, successfully limiting a formidable MI batting order to just 144 runs, with most of the damage occurring during the powerplay.
Rohit Sharma kicked off the innings with a scoop for a boundary, but on the next ball in the LSG vs MI match, he hit straight to the cover fielder off Mohsin Khan in the second over. Suryakumar Yadav also started well, hitting a six over the leg side. Still, Marcus Stoinis quickly countered by claiming his wicket, cramping him for room, and forcing an edge to the wicketkeeper. The situation worsened for MI in the last over of the powerplay when Tilak Varma was run out by Ravi Bishnoi. Hardik Pandya then walked out and was dismissed on the first ball, with Naveen getting an edge through to the wicketkeeper. At this point in the LSG vs MI contest, MI found themselves in dire straits at 28 for four after just six overs.
However, Nehal Wadhera and Ishan Kishan began to script a recovery for Mumbai Indians from this challenging situation. Initially, they had to deal with the pace of Mayank, who was making his comeback after injury. They displayed attacking intent against his pace, although Ishan benefited from some luck when Turner dropped a chance at deep square-leg during the LSG vs MI game.
The partnership developed steadily, adding 53 runs by the 14th over. Ishan Kishan, who scored 32 off 36 balls, was dismissed when he got a leading edge off Bishnoi and was caught at short third-man. With the slogovers approaching, MI decided to accelerate their scoring. In the LSG vs MI match, when Mayank bowled the 15th over, Wadhera scored 16 runs, including two sixes and a four.
Wadhera and Tim David worked to push MI to a competitive total with aggressive hitting in the slog overs. However, Wadhera was dismissed for a vital 46 when he was bowled by Mohsin in the 18th over. Mayank then returned to claim Nabi’s wicket in the next over but unfortunately left the field with an injury after delivering that ball in the LSG vs MI contest.
David played a crucial role in the slog overs, scoring an unbeaten 35 off 18 balls during the LSG vs. MI match. He utilized his long handle effectively, hitting four boundaries, including three fours and a six, which were vital in propelling MI to 144.
LSG’s chase began on a challenging note as Arshin Kulkarni was trapped leg-before by the slinky Nuwan Thushara. In the first two overs, MI’s bowlers posed numerous challenges for the batters. Thushara managed to generate movement with his unique action, while Jasprit Bumrah bowled in tight channels during the second over. Marcus Stoinis, coming in at No. 3, got off the mark by digging out a yorker and finding the inside edge for a boundary.
The LSG vs MI contest saw Lucknow Super Giants break free in the fourth over when Stoinis hit two fours off Coetzee. KL Rahul then made his mark by attacking the tricky Thushara in the next over, scoring 20 runs in total, including a six and three fours. He notably hit a helicopter shot-like loft over mid-on for four. He followed it up by smashing a six down the ground off Bumrah as the powerplay concluded. In no time, LSG reached their fifty, putting them on a solid path toward victory after losing an early wicket in the LSG vs MI match.
Shortly after the powerplay concluded in the LSG vs MI match, Rahul was dismissed for 28 while attempting to hit Hardik over mid-wicket; Nabi made a spectacular catch just inches from the boundary. Following this, Stoinis and Hooda steadied the innings, guiding LSG toward their target.
However, LSG lost Hooda and Stoinis quickly during the 14th and 15th overs, yet they remained well on course. Stoinis returned to the pavilion after scoring a crucial 62 off 45 balls, which included seven fours and two sixes.
Jasprit Bumrah ramped up the pressure as the match progressed by limiting LSG to just one run in the 17th over. This pressure culminated in Turner’s wicket in the next over; he attempted a scoop off Coetzee but ended up getting bowled in the LSG vs. MI contest.
LSG needed 22 runs off 17 balls, and Ayush Badoni started by facing a dot before scoring a leg bye for four down the leg side. He then top-edged a pull for another four, helping to alleviate some pressure. However, Badoni ran out while attempting a risky second run in the penultimate. Nicholas Pooran and Krunal Pandya stepped up, ensuring no further hiccups as LSG crossed the finish line in the final over, navigating a few tense moments.
