Delhi Capitals (DC) secured their first points in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 in a recent match between DC vs CSK with a 20-run victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The match at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam showcased a solid all-round performance from DC, enabling them to overcome the in-form CSK.
In a batting-friendly environment at their home venue, DC opted to bat first. Prithvi Shaw replaced Ricky Bhui and opened the innings alongside David Warner. Initially, the DC openers played cautiously, scoring 24 runs in the first four overs. However, when Deepak Chahar returned for his third over during the power play, DC batters unleashed an aggressive approach, accumulating 18 runs, highlighted by Warner’s scoop for six behind square. Mustafizur Rahman bowled the final over of the power play, where Shaw joined the attack, hitting three crisp boundaries in an over that yielded 20 runs. By the end of the six overs, DC stood at 62 for no loss, setting a solid foundation in the DC vs CSK clash.
The assault continued beyond the powerplay as Prithvi Shaw welcomed Ravindra Jadeja with a six-over long-on, helping DC maintain a run rate of over 10 runs per over. However, Matheesha Pathirana soon made his presence felt, aiding CSK in their comeback during the DC vs CSK clash.
Pathirana’s initial impact came not from his clingy bowling but from an acrobatic catch in the field. In the 10th over, as Warner attempted a reverse scoop off Mustafizur, Pathirana, positioned at short third, launched himself to the right and executed a stunning dive to catch the ball, leaving the batter shell-shocked. In the next over, Shaw, who had just hit another six, edged a delivery from Jadeja into the gloves of MS Dhoni. This sequence marked a turning point in the match, showcasing the dynamic shifts in the ongoing DC vs CSK battle.
Rishabh Pant and Mitchell Marsh embarked on a recovery mission over the next few overs in the DC vs CSK match. While they hit some boundaries, the run rate had slowed since the initial phase. When Matheesha Pathirana bowled the 15th over, he made a significant impact, castling Marsh with his trademark slinging yorker that slipped under the bat and shattered the stumps. Shortly after, Tristan Stubbs was left bamboozled by another toe-crusher. At 134 for four in 15 overs, DC faced a tough challenge in the final five.
This is when Pant took charge, unleashing his aggressive shots. Gradually, he shifted gears, attacking both Mustafizur and Pathirana. Pant pulled Mustafizur for six and, in the 19th over, expertly dug out an attempted yorker from Pathirana, lofting it over long-on for another six. A couple of boundaries followed, bringing Pant past his half-century—his first since his celebrated comeback. Although he fell soon after, Pant’s efforts were crucial in helping Delhi Capitals set a target of 191 in the ongoing DC vs CSK showdown.
CSK’s reply in the DC vs. CSK match was shaky, with Khaleel Ahmed generating significant movement early on. In the very first over, Ruturaj Gaikwad edged one from outside off stump into Rishabh Pant’s gloves. Scoring runs proved challenging in those initial overs as both Ishant Sharma and Khaleel bowled tightly. The pressure mounted when Rachin Ravindra attempted to loft Khaleel in the third over but skied it to mid-off. By the end of the powerplay, Khaleel had bowled three overs, claiming both wickets for just nine runs.
Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell were tasked with scripting a recovery. Rahane batted positively from the start, driving Ishant for two fours in the fourth over with a standout pull shot for six off Anrich Nortje. Mitchell settled in and eventually attacked Axar Patel in the ninth over, lofting him for a massive six down the ground. After the first time out, the Chennai Super Kings batters decided to accelerate. Rasikh Salam, the Impact Player for Shaw, was struck for two sixes, signaling CSK’s intentions. However, Axar Patel made a breakthrough in the next over, with Mitchell hitting the ball back to him, adding another twist to the ongoing DC vs CSK contest.
Ajinkya Rahane was anchoring the innings well, moving into the 40s with confidence. However, in the 14th over, Mukesh Kumar struck a double blow by dismissing Rahane, caught at long-on, and then having Sameer Rizvi caught at short third-man off his very first ball. This marked the turning point as DC’s bowlers tightened their grip on the game.
As the slog overs approached, the asking rate climbed for CSK. Things worsened when Shivam Dube holed out to long-off in the 17th over, giving Mukesh his third wicket. This brought MS Dhoni to the crease to a rousing reception, and he quickly entertained the crowd with two boundaries. Dhoni lofted a massive six-over cover off Khaleel effortlessly in the next over.
With three figures for 21, Mukesh bowled a superb penultimate over, effectively nullifying any outside chance CSK had in the DC vs CSK clash. Dhoni, who finished with 37 not out off 16 balls, provided a thrilling finale in the last over, smashing 4, 6, 4, 6 against Nortje. However, it wasn’t enough, as CSK ultimately fell short by 20 runs in this exciting encounter.
