Sydney Thunder History

The Sydney Thunder is a professional cricket team from Australia that competes in the Big Bash League (BBL). Along with the Sydney Sixers, they are the successors to the New South Wales Blues, who previously played in the old KFC Twenty20 Big Bash. The Thunder’s team colors are lime green, chosen to stand out and avoid overlap with other Sydney sports teams. Cricket Australia did not allow them to use the traditional sky blue of New South Wales.

The team made its debut in the 2011-12 BBL season but struggled in its early years, finishing last in each of its first three seasons and second last in its fourth. Initially playing at Stadium Australia, the Thunder moved to Sydney Showground Stadium in 2015 and have played there since.

The 2015–16 season marked a turnaround as the Thunder finished fourth and went on to win the BBL title by defeating the Melbourne Stars in the final. Michael Hussey, who retired from playing after the season, became the club’s Director of Cricket. Under subsequent captains, including Shane Watson, Callum Ferguson, and a shared captaincy of Chris Green and Jason Sangha, the team has seen varying success. Notably, in a match on December 16, 2022, the Thunder set a record for the lowest score in T20 history, being dismissed for just 15 runs.
