Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) is a professional cricket team based in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. It competes in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Owned by Kalanithi Maran of the SUN Group, SRH was established in 2012 following the termination of the Deccan Chargers. The team is currently coached by Daniel Vettori and captained by Pat Cummins, with their primary home ground being the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, which can hold 39,000 spectators.
Making their IPL debut in 2013, Sunrisers Hyderabad finished fourth in their first season. They won their first IPL title in 2016, beating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 8 runs in the final. The team reached the finals again in 2018 but lost to Chennai Super Kings, and in 2024, they were defeated by Kolkata Knight Riders in the finals. Known for their strong bowling attack in the past, SRH has transitioned into a formidable batting side. They also hold the record for the highest IPL total with 287 runs. David Warner is their top run-scorer, having won the Orange Cap three times, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar has claimed the Purple Cap twice. The team’s brand value fell to $57.4 million in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting a broader decrease in the IPL’s overall brand value.
Sunrisers Hyderabad took over from the Deccan Chargers in 2012 and played their first IPL season in 2013. After the Deccan Chronicle went bankrupt, Sun TV Network acquired the franchise. They won the bidding war with a deal worth ₹85.05 crore (about $10 million) per year for five years, securing the team a week after the Chargers were dropped due to financial issues. Sun TV Network, based in Chennai, is one of India’s largest media companies, owning 32 TV channels and 45 FM radio stations.
The team’s jersey was revealed on March 8, 2013, and their anthem, composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, was released on March 12, 2013. The logo was introduced on December 20, 2012. Initially managed by Kris Srikkanth, the leadership included veteran Muttiah Muralitharan, Tom Moody, and V. V. S. Laxman.
