Perth Scorchers History, Player Line-Up and Team Standing

The Perth Scorchers are a leading Australian Twenty20 cricket team in the Big Bash League (BBL). Based in Perth, Western Australia, the team wears an orange uniform and plays their home games at Perth Stadium.

The Scorchers are the most successful team in BBL history, with five championships to their name and three runner-up finishes. They lost their second final to the Brisbane Heat but then won back-to-back titles in the following two seasons, becoming the first team to achieve this. Their victories were against the Hobart Hurricanes and in a dramatic last-ball finish against the Sydney Sixers at Canberra’s Manuka Oval. Initially coached by Mickey Arthur, who left for the Australian team, the Scorchers were led by Lachlan Stevens and later by Justin Langer. After Langer took the Australian coaching role in 2018, Adam Voges became the new coach.

Notable players for the Scorchers have included Shaun Marsh, Michael Klinger, Cameron Bancroft, Mitch Marsh, Mitchell Johnson, Adam Voges, Ashton Turner, David Willey, Yasir Arafat, Usman Qadir, Laurie Evans, Brad Hogg, Jason Behrendorff, Jhye Richardson, and Andrew Tye. The team also competes in the Women’s Big Bash League.

Perth Scorchers History

2023–2024: BBL13 season

For the second year in a row, the Perth Scorchers lost a key opening batter when Cameron Bancroft signed with the Melbourne Renegades. They chose not to use a platinum pick in the international draft but did sign several English players. They picked Zak Crawley with the 16th pick and brought back Laurie Evans with the 17th pick. The team also retained Max Eskinazi and re-signed Sam Whiteman, who had played for the Sydney Thunder in the previous seasons. Mitch Marsh missed the Big Bash for the second consecutive year due to Test duties.

The Scorchers started the season well, winning their first four completed matches after an opening game against the Renegades was washed out. However, in their second match against the Hobart Hurricanes, Ashton Turner injured his right knee, which required surgery and ruled him out for the rest of the tournament. Aaron Hardie stepped in as captain. The team struggled in the second half of the season, losing three of their last five matches and also lost Jhye Richardson to injury. With the season shortened to 10 matches per team and a four-team final, the Scorchers finished third on the table and prepared for a clash with the Adelaide Strikers in the Eliminator.

2022–2023: BBL12 season

The Perth Scorchers faced significant changes from their BBL11 championship squad. Opener Patterson joined the Sixers, and Munro was drafted by the Heat. The Scorchers made three picks in the BBL international draft, but none of these players participated in the tournament. Laurie Evans, the 12th pick, had his contract terminated after testing positive for a banned substance. Phil Salt, the 19th pick, withdrew due to injury, and Mitch Marsh was also ruled out on the same day. Mills, the 30th pick, withdrew later for personal reasons related to his daughter’s stroke.

To address these losses, the Scorchers signed South African batter Faf du Plessis and English players Adam Lyth and Stephen Eskinazi. Despite these setbacks, the Scorchers performed well, finishing first on the ladder. They beat the Sydney Sixers by 7 wickets in the Qualifier match, thanks to a 132* run partnership between captain Ashton Turner and opener Cam Bancroft, earning a spot in the BBL final for the eighth time.

In the BBL12 Decider against the Brisbane Heat, held on a scorching day at Perth Stadium before a record crowd of 53,886, the Scorchers successfully chased a target of 175. Turner scored 53 runs off 32 balls before being run out. With 39 runs needed from the last 19 balls, Nick Hobson and teenager Cooper Connolly stepped up. Connolly scored 25 runs off 11 balls, including 2 sixes, while Hobson hit a six and a four to secure the win, giving the Scorchers their fifth Big Bash title.

2021–2022: BBL11 season

The Perth Scorchers retained most of their key players for BBL11. Although they lost overseas stars Livingstone, Clarke, and Roy, they signed English batter Laurie Evans and fast bowler Tymal Mills. A unique challenge arose when Western Australia’s travel restrictions, due to COVID-19, forced the Scorchers to play all their remaining games away from home.

Despite this, the Scorchers had an impressive start, winning their first six matches. They ended the season at the top of the table with 11 wins from 14 matches. Key players Marsh, Agar, and Tye were exceptional and were named to the ESPNcricinfo BBL Team of the Season.

In the Qualifier, the Scorchers secured a comfortable 48-run victory over the Sydney Sixers. They met the Sixers again in the Final, which was six days later. With strong bowling and a remarkable partnership between Evans and Turner, the Scorchers won by 79 runs, claiming their record fourth BBL title.

Perth Scorchers Rivalry

The Perth Scorchers’ rivalry in the Big Bash League (BBL) is most intensely felt in their clashes with the Sydney Sixers. This rivalry is marked by high-stakes encounters and competitive spirit, with both teams often featuring prominently in the playoffs and finals. The Scorchers and Sixers have a history of closely contested matches, with each game adding to the intensity of their rivalry. The frequent match-ups between these two teams highlight their status as powerhouses in the BBL, making their contests some of the most eagerly anticipated and thrilling fixtures of the season.
