Reeza Hendricks and Tony de Zorzi are among the South African players available in the upcoming SA20 auction. In addition, as overseas players, fast bowlers Shamar Joseph, Naseem Shah, Josh Little, and Josh Hull will also be on offer. Nearly 200 players, including 115 South Africans, have made the shortlist, but only 13 spots must be filled by the six franchises.
The Paarl Royals have the largest auction budget, with R11.95 million to spend. Following them are MI Cape Town, with R8.275 million, and Pretoria Capitals, with R4.575 million. Joburg Super Kings have R3.925 million, while the back-to-back champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, have R2.845 million. Lastly, Durban’s Super Giants have R2.35 million remaining in their budget.
New Zealand opener Martin Guptill, Sri Lanka all-rounder Kamindu Mendis, and Afghanistan wrist-spinner Qais Ahmad are also among the standout overseas players on the shortlist.
“Some of the biggest names on the international T20 circuit have already signed up for season 3, and I am looking forward to seeing how the teams finalize their squads from this competitive auction list of players,” Graeme Smith, the former captain of South Africa and the current commissioner of SA20, stated.
Reeza Hendricks, recently released by the Super Kings, is one of the most notable South African players in the auction shortlist, alongside fellow opener Tony de Zorzi. Each squad must consist of 19 players, including at least ten South Africans, a maximum of seven international players, one rookie, and one wildcard player.
All franchises, except the Super Kings, have announced their wildcard selections. The Paarl Royals have chosen former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik as their wildcard. After retiring from Indian and international cricket in June, Karthik will become the first Indian player to participate in the SA20.
The SA20 2025 auction is scheduled for October 1, with the tournament set to begin on January 9. This timing coincides with other major leagues, including Australia’s Big Bash League, UAE’s ILT20, and New Zealand’s Super Smash. The Super Kings have until December 30 to finalize their wildcard player.

The Lions are set to face the Markhors in the second Eliminator on Friday after their thrilling 12-run victory over the Stallions in the Champions One-Day Cup. In their match, the Lions posted 263 runs for 9 wickets, thanks to Ahmed Daniyal’s impressive unbeaten score of 65 runs and valuable contributions from Mohammad Taha (47) and Aamer Yamin (46). The Stallions managed to score 251 runs, with Yasir top-scoring at 39. Khushdil Shah and Daniyal took three wickets, with Khushdil finishing with figures of 3 for 40.
The Lions opted to bat first but struggled early on, finding themselves at 43 for 3. However, Sharoon Siraj (38) and Taha steadied the innings with a crucial 77-run partnership. Despite this, the Lions faced another collapse, slipping from 120 for 3 to 140 for 7 in just five overs. Facing the prospect of a low total, Daniyal and Yamin turned the tide with an aggressive 81-run partnership for the eighth wicket, ultimately lifting the Lions to 263. Yamin was run out for 46, while Daniyal’s innings included two fours and five sixes. Ubaid Shah was the standout bowler for the Stallions, taking 3 wickets for 46 runs. The Lions now look forward to their next challenge against the Markhors, with the winner advancing to face the Panthers in Sunday’s final.
The Stallions started their chase of 264 runs positively, with an opening partnership of 64 runs between Yasir Khan (39) and Maaz Sadaqat (27). However, the innings were downturned as they lost three wickets quickly, slipping to 68 for 3. Khushdil Shah played a vital role in this collapse, taking out Sadaqat and Adil Amin.
A promising partnership of 69 runs for the fourth wicket between Tayyab Tahir and Hussain Talat gave the Stallions hope. Still, Ahmed Daniyal broke their momentum by dismissing Tahir in the 30th over. Stallions’ captain Mohammad Haris and Jahanad Khan tried to provide a late push. Still, the Lions maintained control by taking regular wickets. As the game neared its end, the Stallions needed 23 runs from the last two overs with only two wickets remaining. Ultimately, the Lions bowled them out for 251 runs, with Khushdil finishing with 3 wickets for 40 runs and Daniyal claiming 3 for 59.
