The Punjab Kings are undergoing a significant overhaul of their coaching staff to improve their performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In a recent development, the franchise decided to part ways with Trevor Bayliss, who served as the head coach, and Sanjay Bangar, the head of cricket development. This decision was made by the franchise board, which comprises the four co-owners of the team, reflecting a strategic shift in their approach to building a more competitive squad.
As part of this revamp, the Kings have appointed Ricky Ponting, a legendary cricketer and respected coach, as their new head coach. Ponting’s vast experience and tactical understanding are expected to bring a fresh perspective to the team, which has struggled in recent seasons. Under Bayliss’s leadership, the Punjab Kings finished eighth in the 2023 season and ninth the year before, continuing a disappointing trend for a franchise that has yet to secure an IPL title.
Trevor Bayliss took over as head coach after the 2022 IPL season, hoping to turn the team’s fortunes around. However, the King failed to achieve the desired results despite his efforts. Sanjay Bangar, who joined the franchise in December 2023, played a vital role in the team’s cricket development but could not help the Kings break free from their subpar performances.
Bangar’s association with the Punjab Kings is noteworthy. He first joined the franchise in 2014 as head coach, a role he held until the end of the 2016 season. Following his tenure with the Kings, Bangar became the assistant coach for the Indian national team, contributing to several players’ development. In 2021, he took on a position as a batting consultant with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He was eventually promoted to head coach there. After a successful stint with RCB, he returned to the Punjab Kings in December 2023, looking to return his expertise to the franchise.
With Ricky Ponting at the helm and a fresh coaching strategy, the Punjab Kings are looking to redefine their approach in the IPL and finally claim their first championship title. The upcoming season will be crucial for the franchise as it strives to improve its standings and foster a winning culture.
Trevor Bayliss took over as head coach of the Punjab Kings after replacing former India captain Anil Kumble, who held the position from 2020 to 2022. In their ongoing quest for success, the Kings have struggled to find a stable winning formula, leading to frequent changes in their coaching staff over the last decade.
Kumble was the fifth coach appointed by the Kings in just five seasons. The sequence of coaches includes Sanjay Bangar (2014-2016), Virender Sehwag (2017), Brad Hodge (2018), and Mike Hesson (2019). This constant turnover highlights the franchise’s difficulty establishing a consistent strategy and performance.
Recently, the Kings made a significant move by signing former Australian captain Ricky Ponting to a four-year contract covering the 2025-2028 seasons. In an interview with IPLwin365, Ponting shared his thoughts on taking on this new role and the challenges ahead for the team. “The biggest thing I want to do at Punjab Kings is make everyone aware that it will be a different place. We will not sit back and accept mediocrity, finish down the bottom, and have other people sit back and talk about how the franchise is going. It is going to be more dynamic. And people are going to be talking about this team and this franchise in a different way than ever before.”
An unbeaten century stand between Dean Elgar and Tom Westley put Essex in a strong position before rain interrupted play. This partnership came just after Surrey, the reigning champions, had celebrated their recent victory over Durham, marking their third consecutive win in the Vitality County Championship.
During the 28 and a half overs played before the rain arrived, Essex, who won the toss, reached 116 for 1. The persistent heavy rain forced the players off the pitch just nine minutes before lunch. Elgar and Westley dominated the Surrey bowling attack, forming a solid partnership worth 112 runs in just 26 overs.
Westley began the innings cautiously but quickly picked up the pace as the partnership developed. He finished with 52 runs off 78 balls, including 11 boundaries. Elgar also made a significant contribution, scoring 54 runs from 88 balls, which pushed him past 1,000 runs for the season. He started the innings strongly before allowing Westley to take charge as their partnership flourished.
Play began on time after ground staff worked from 6:30 AM to pump 4,500 liters of water off the field. However, just as the players were settling in for lunch, the rain returned, leading to play being called off for the day at 2:30 PM.
Essex had a rough start, losing Robin Das after just six balls. He played a loose shot off Tom Lawes, which helped calm any nerves for Josh Blake, who was keeping wicket. Blake, who scored an unbeaten century earlier in the summer during the Metro Bank Cup at Chelmsford, was one of three players making their first-class debuts for Surrey, alongside batsman Ollie Sykes and spinner Yousef Majid.
During the early part of the innings, Dean Elgar took control of the partnership with Tom Westley, who contributed only 13 runs initially. Elgar found his rhythm quickly, hitting three boundaries off Kemar Roach, including two well-driven shots through the covers. His seventh four, a flick to fine leg off Dan Lawrence, marked his first 1,000 runs for the season at Essex. A single off James Taylor brought him past fifty for the ninth time this season.
Westley, who achieved over 1,000 runs for the first time in his career last season, picked up the pace as dark clouds gathered and rain approached. He reached his sixth fifty-plus score of the year shortly after celebrating a century partnership with Elgar and surpassed 700 runs for the season.
Westley completed his half-century in 76 balls, just two balls slower than Elgar. During an exciting six-ball stretch against James Taylor and Dan Lawrence, he hit three of his eleven fours, including four leg byes just two balls later. One of Westley’s standout shots was a sharp pull shot played behind square off Taylor, showcasing his impressive batting skills.
