The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet announced the retention rules for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). It is still unclear how many players each team will be allowed to keep. Last month, the BCCI held a meeting with IPL franchise owners in Mumbai and is expected to release the rules soon.
Many top Indian and international players are likely to stay with their current teams after strong performances in the 2024 season. However, some big names might have to switch teams and find new franchises.
Pat Cummins: In the IPL 2024 mini auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad signed Pat Cummins for ₹20.50 crore and appointed him as captain, replacing Aiden Markram. In his debut season as skipper, the Australian fast bowler led SRH to the final. Despite this success, the franchise might release him, possibly opting to retain Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen as their overseas players instead.
KL Rahul: Signed by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for ₹17 crore before the IPL 2022 mega auction, KL Rahul captained the team for three seasons. After a viral discussion with LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka during IPL 2024, rumors surfaced about his possible exit. While recent reports suggest KL Rahul may be retained for IPL 2025, it wouldn’t be surprising if LSG decides to part ways with their top run-scorer.

Star Indian batter KL Rahul is expected to be retained by the Lucknow Super Giants ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, reports suggest that the 32-year-old may not captain the team in the next season of the league.
According to IANS, Rahul, the all-time leading run-scorer for LSG, is considering stepping down as captain to concentrate more on his batting. He joined LSG from Punjab Kings for ₹17 crore before the IPL 2022 mega auction. Recently, he met with LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka in Kolkata to discuss his role with the franchise.
“The meeting was official with the CEO Sanjiv Goenka on Monday; the captaincy and retention topics were discussed. However, Rahul is unlikely to captain the side in the upcoming edition as he wants to explore himself more as a batter. Goenka has full confidence in Rahul, and he will be retained as a player but will not be seen captaining the side,” a source was quoted as saying by IANS.
According to sources, former West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran and Indian all-rounder Krunal Pandya are contenders to replace KL Rahul as the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants.
“We are still exploring the captaincy option, but with BCCI agreeing on player retention conditions, we have two players (Krunal Pandya and Nicholas Pooran) in the race,” he added.
Both Krunal Pandya and Nicholas Pooran have experience leading the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. Krunal stepped in as captain during the 2023 season when Rahul was sidelined due to injury. Pooran also had the opportunity to captain the team in one match during the 2024 season.

KL Rahul made his IPL debut with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013 and later played for Sunrisers Hyderabad for a couple of seasons. He was signed by Punjab Kings in the 2018 mega auction, and during his four-year tenure with the Mohali-based franchise, he scored 2,548 runs in 55 matches. Rahul captained the Preity Zinta-owned side in the 2020 and 2021 editions of the IPL before leaving to join the Lucknow Super Giants.
