National Cricket League USA: Issues with Sanctioning, Player Regulations, and Playing Conditions

The rapid expansion of cricket leagues around the world has significantly increased the game’s popularity. However, this growth has also raised concerns about the quality and regulation of these competitions. While some leagues showcase top-level cricket, others blur the lines between established tournaments and questionable enterprises.

One such example is the National Cricket League (NCL) in the United States, which follows last year’s American Premier League (APL). The NCL has drawn criticism for not following several International Cricket Council (ICC) rules. A key ICC requirement is that each team must include at least seven domestic or associate players in their starting lineups. Unfortunately, the NCL has often failed to meet this standard, raising questions about how it obtained ICC sanctioning in the first place. This is especially concerning since Haroon Lorgat, the former ICC CEO, serves as the league’s commissioner, suggesting that the league should be more compliant with ICC regulations. The ICC has confirmed to Cricbuzz that they will investigate these issues.

Concerns have also arisen regarding how the National Cricket League (NCL) manages foreign players, particularly in relation to U.S. immigration laws. For athletes to participate in a professional league in the U.S., they typically need specific visas, such as the P1 or O1 visa, which can cost up to $6,000 per player. An American tournament may spend nearly $200,000 to sponsor the necessary visas for its foreign players. However, some players have reported that the league may have allowed them to enter the U.S. on tourist visas to cut costs, which would violate U.S. immigration laws and expose them to potential legal penalties, including fines or deportation. When Cricbuzz sought clarification on foreign player visas, the NCL did not respond.

On-Field Challenges and Financial Uncertainty in the NCL

These organizational issues have also impacted the on-field experience. A major concern has been the condition of the playing surface, particularly the pitch, which is crucial for any successful cricket tournament. From the beginning, players have complained about the drop-in wicket, noting unpredictable bounce and uneven surfaces. Colin Munro, a participant, expressed his frustration after struggling with the pitch, pointing out its poor preparation. By the tournament’s second day, teams were advised to rely solely on spin bowling, as fast bowlers were considered a risk to the batsmen.

The financial situation of the National Cricket League (NCL) remains unclear. The tournament has not secured a paid broadcasting deal, and during a visit to the stadium, it was evident that attendance was low, with many fans indicating they received free entry tickets. Reports suggest that the NCL is actively seeking investment from local cricket enthusiasts.

The NCL features 10-over matches, each lasting about 90 minutes. To enhance its appeal, the league has brought in high-profile ambassadors like Sunil Gavaskar, Viv Richards, and Wasim Akram. Recently, Sachin Tendulkar was announced as one of the league’s “owners.” Additionally, the league has included mid-match performances by artists like Mika Singh and Usha Uthup. However, it remains to be seen if the quality of the matches will live up to the promotional efforts.

Leach Leads England to Memorable Victory

Agha Salman and Aamer Jamal’s half-centuries went in vain as Pakistan was dismissed for 220 in their second innings, leading to a heavy defeat by an innings and 47 runs against England. This match marked the first time in Test cricket that a team lost by an innings despite scoring over 500 runs in the first innings.

On the penultimate day, Pakistan’s top order collapsed after England had established a massive lead. By the start of the final day, Pakistan still trailed by 115 runs with only four wickets remaining. In the morning session, Salman and Jamal managed to fend off the English bowlers for nearly an hour. Salman, who scored a century in the first innings, reached his half-century early on, hitting a boundary in just the fifth over of the day with a deft glance down the leg side. With little movement in the pitch, England quickly resorted to a short-ball strategy. Jamal struggled with a couple of these deliveries, narrowly avoiding catches, and one even struck his helmet.

The partnership between Agha Salman and Aamer Jamal flourished, reaching 109 runs—the first century stand for a seventh-wicket pair for Pakistan in a third innings. While they might not have been able to save the Test, their efforts brought Pakistan closer to erasing the first-innings deficit and raised hopes of extending the contest into a fourth innings.

Pakistan’s Resistance Crumbles as England Clinches Victory

However, their resistance ended an hour into the day’s play when Salman was trapped lbw by Jack Leach, with the ball pitching low on his pads. Despite taking a review, he was unable to overturn the decision. Jamal continued to fend off the English bowlers, bringing up his half-century with a single to mid-on. He enjoyed a bit of luck, as Ollie Pope dropped him at square leg shortly after, and Pope missed a direct hit while Jamal attempted a quick single. Shaheen Afridi briefly swung his bat but ultimately misjudged a drive, resulting in Leach taking a diving return catch.

From that point on, it was just a formality. With Abrar Ahmad hospitalized and unable to bat, Pakistan’s innings ended when Naseem Shah was dismissed while attempting to step out against Jack Leach. He was stumped for 6 runs after being outsmarted by Leach’s flatter delivery.

Although Leach took all three wickets that fell on the final day, the groundwork for England’s victory in Multan was laid by Harry Brook and Joe Root. They led England to a staggering 823 for 7 declared, after having spent more than a day and a half on the field in response to Pakistan’s first innings total of 556.

With this defeat, Pakistan recorded their sixth consecutive loss, extending their winless streak at home to 11 matches.

Brief Scores:
Pakistan: 556 & 220 (Agha Salman 63, Aamer Jamal 55*; Jack Leach 4-30)
England: 823/7 declared (Harry Brook 317, Joe Root 262; Naseem Shah 2-157)
Result: England won by an innings and 47 runs.
