North sound: The St Kitts and Nevis Patriots pulled off a thrilling one-wicket victory over the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in the opening match of the Caribbean Premier League at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Thursday.
Hometown hero Jewel Andrew scored a half-century for the Falcons, who posted 163-4 in their 20 overs. In response, the Patriots chased down the target with a dramatic finish. Anrich Nortje secured the win by taking a single off the last ball from Roshon Primus, ending the match at 164-9 in 20 overs.
This win was a strong start for the Patriots, who had a disappointing 2023 CPL season, winning only one game and finishing last. After winning the toss and choosing to field, the Patriots quickly put the Falcons under pressure when Nortje dismissed Teddy Bishop for just one run, leaving the Falcons at 7-1.
Fakhar Zaman and Kofi James combined for a solid 60-run partnership for the second wicket. Still, their innings took a hit when Tabraiz Shamsi dismissed Zaman for 43, and James followed soon after for 22. This left the Falcons at 80-3 in the 11th over.
Sam Billings contributed 18 runs before being dismissed by Dominic Drakes, allowing the Patriots to gain control of the match. However, Andrew and Fabian Allen came together in the final overs to boost the Falcons’ total, adding 61 runs in the last six overs.
The 17-year-old Andrew, making his CPL debut, scored an unbeaten 50 off 30 balls with seven fours and one six. Allen finished not out with 24 from 17 balls, including one boundary and two sixes. Andrew reached his half-century in the final with a single off fast bowler Ryan John.
In response, the Patriots got off to a great start with openers Evin Lewis and captain Andre Fletcher, who put on 37 runs in just five overs.
Fletcher was the first Patriots player to be dismissed, stumped off the bowling of left-arm spinner Imad Wasim for 25. Evin Lewis followed shortly, caught at long off while trying to hit Shamar Springer out of the park for 29. By this point, the Patriots were 71-2 after eight overs.
Kyle Mayers played a crucial role for the Patriots, scoring 39 off 24 balls, including three fours and two sixes. Despite his efforts, the Patriots slipped to 111-5 as Springer took the wickets of Tristan Stubbs (2), Odean Smith (27), and Rilee Rossouw (duck).
Mayers’ dismissal in the 16th over with the score at 133-6 kept the match tense. The situation worsened as Ryan John, Dominic Drakes, and Ashmead Nedd lost their wickets for just five runs, leaving the Patriots at 159-9.
With seven runs needed from the final over, Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi held their composure to secure a thrilling victory for the Patriots.
Shamar Springer was the standout bowler for the Falcons, finishing with 4-29 from four overs, while Roshon Primus took 2-21 from two overs.
