IPL 2025: R Ashwin Speaks on Rohit Sharma’s Future with Mumbai Indians, Stating, ‘Money Doesn’t Matter To…’

Rohit Sharma had a solid IPL 2024 season, amassing 417 runs with an average of 32.07 and an impressive strike rate of 150. He recorded one century and one fifty, with his highest score being 105*.

Star Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin expressed his belief that Rohit will remain with the Mumbai Indians and continue playing for them in the IPL 2025 season. Last year, Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit as captain of the team, which sparked some criticism from a portion of the fanbase, given Rohit’s long-standing leadership with one of the most successful franchises in IPL history.

“Even if you think like Rohit, it’s not wrong at all. I don’t want any headache. I have been a captain for India. I have captained Mumbai many times. Even if I am not a captain, I am going to Mumbai happily. If I play for Mumbai, it’s super. I am sure most players are like that. After a stage, money doesn’t matter for some of those players. That’s the thing,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Rohit had a decent IPL 2024 season with the bat, scoring 417 runs at an average of 32.07 and a strike rate of 150. He scored a century and fifty, with the best score of 105*.

Rohit Sharma has been a legendary figure for the Mumbai Indians (MI) since joining the franchise in 2011 as a rising talent. Over 199 IPL matches in MI’s Blue and Gold, he has amassed 5,084 runs at an average of 29.39 and a strike rate of 129.86, with one century and 34 fifties, his highest score being 109*. After taking over the captaincy from Ricky Ponting in 2013, Rohit led MI to their most successful era, securing five IPL titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020) and reaching the playoffs twice.

Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit as captain last year after a stellar run with Gujarat Titans, including a title win in their debut season in 2022. Despite the leadership change, Rohit remains MI’s all-time highest run-scorer, with 5,357 runs in 208 matches at an average of 29.59 and a strike rate close to 130, including one century and 35 fifties. Rohit also helped MI win two Champions League T20 titles in 2011 and 2013, captaining the latter victory.

Earlier in his career, Rohit played for the Deccan Chargers, where he scored 1,170 runs in 45 matches, averaging 30.79, and winning the IPL title in 2009. With six IPL titles to his name, Rohit is also the fourth-highest run-scorer in IPL history, accumulating 6,254 runs in 244 matches at an average of 29.63 and a strike rate of 130.15, with one century and 42 fifties.

Rohit Sharma On LSG’s Radar Ahead Of IPL 2025? Fielding Coach Jonty Rhodes Clears Air Around Speculations

In light of the upcoming IPL 2025 season, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) fielding coach Jonty Rhodes addressed the growing speculation regarding the future of India captain Rohit Sharma, particularly the possibility of him joining LSG. When asked about KL Rahul’s future, Rhodes expressed relief that he wouldn’t be responsible for making decisions about player retention.

As the mega auction for IPL 2025 approaches, uncertainty surrounding Rohit’s future with the Mumbai Indians continues to rise. There have been increasing rumors about him potentially leaving the franchise. Rhodes, who has closely observed Rohit’s performance during their time together with the five-time IPL champions, praised the dynamic opener, highlighting his significant impact on the game.

“I mean, for a long time at Mumbai Indians, I felt I had the best job in the world. I got to watch Rohit Shama practice and play cricket. He is so elegant,” Rhodes told ANI.

While Jonty Rhodes admires Rohit Sharma’s elegance on the field, he believes that LSG does not necessarily need Rohit to achieve success. Rhodes recognizes Rohit’s talent but feels the team can thrive without his presence.

“I mean, there’s the balance of teams, who’s in the side. I love watching Rohit Sharma bat, but I’m not saying he must come in and replace, and then suddenly we change our setup. So whatever, as I said, whatever happens, who is ever there? I’ll be doing my best to support,” he added.

In addition to the speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s future, the situation of LSG skipper KL Rahul has also attracted attention. Reports indicate that Rahul may not play for LSG again after franchise owner Sanjiv Goenka reportedly criticized him following their defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

When asked about Rahul’s future, Jonty Rhodes expressed relief at not being responsible for making retention decisions regarding players. This suggests that the uncertainty around Rahul’s position has created a challenging environment for the franchise.

“Well, luckily, hypothetically, or in real life, that’s as a fielding coach. I don’t have to worry about that just now,” he added.

Considered one of the greatest fielders in cricket history, Jonty Rhodes remains actively engaged in the sport even after retiring from professional play. Beyond his coaching responsibilities, he is exploring various roles within cricket, recently taking on the position of brand ambassador for the inaugural season of the Pro Cricket League (PCL). As he embarks on this new adventure, Rhodes is also focused on personal growth, continually seeking to enhance his skills as an individual.

“I think what a learning curve is seeing if I can sit off the field. As a coach, you don’t get involved during the game, but it leads to a part of the buildup, part of the preparation. So I will have to see if I have got the patience to be able to sit and watch the whole thing to still be able to do a little bit of coaching, but yeah, a very new role, and it’s a part of evolving as an individual. As a cricket player, you always evolve. You have to work on your technique and your skills, so yes, I’m trying to improve my skills as a human being,” he stated.
