IPL 2025 Auction: CSK Most-Valued IPL Franchise, MI At No. 4; See Full List

Former Indian batter Mohammad Kaif, who has played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, believes the franchise should consider signing Indian skipper Rohit Sharma in the IPL 2025 auction if he is released by the Mumbai Indians. Kaif describes Rohit as a very intelligent cricketer and suggests that the Virat Kohli-led team should appoint Rohit as their new captain.

Rohit, who has led the Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles, was removed from captaincy last year, with Hardik Pandya taking over as MI skipper for IPL 2024. However, in his first season as captain, Hardik only managed to win four matches, leaving Mumbai at the bottom of the points table.

As speculation grows about Rohit’s potential departure from the Mumbai Indians before the IPL 2025 mega auction, Kaif expressed in a now-viral video that the 37-year-old batter excels at utilizing players effectively and maximizing their potential.

“Players mei 19-20 hota hai, mai guarantee bol raha hoon players mei 19-20 hota hai. Ye banda 18 ko 20 kar deta hai. 18 wale player ko 20 kar deta hai. Gale mei haath daal ke kaam nikalna jaanta hai. Tactical moves jaanta hai, kisko kaha fit karna hai 11 mein, vo role badhiya batata hai. Mera manna hai agar mauka miley RCB ko toh bhai le lo Rohit Sharma ko as a captain (The names of all these players—there are 19-20 players, I am telling you for sure. There are 19-20 players; this guy can make 18-20. He can make 18-20; he knows how to put his hand around the neck and make a move. He knows the tactical moves and where to fit in the 11. He plays that role well, so I believe if the RCB gets a chance, then take Rohit Sharma as a captain).”

Rohit Sharma made his IPL debut in 2008 with the Deccan Chargers and has been with the Mumbai Indians since the 2011 season of the world’s richest cricket league. He is the all-time leading run scorer for MI and holds records for playing the most matches and hitting the most sixes for the Ambani-owned franchise.

‘MS Dhoni Has no Desire to be No.1’: Amidst Uncertain Future, CSK Legend Expected to Stay With Beloved Franchise

The IPL governing council recently finalized the player retention rules ahead of the upcoming mega auction, allowing five-time champions Chennai Super Kings to retain the legendary MS Dhoni as an uncapped player. Although Dhoni has not yet discussed his IPL future with CSK, many former Indian cricketers believe it would be a no-brainer for the franchise to keep the former captain, under whom they have won all their trophies.

Each franchise can retain up to six players from their current squad through either retention or the Right to Match (RTM) option. However, they can have a maximum of five capped players (Indian or overseas) and two uncapped players among their retained choices. The deadline for announcing retained players is October 31.

Former India allrounder Ajay Jadeja stated that Dhoni, who has contributed significantly to CSK, has no desire to be regarded as the top player in the franchise.

“MS Dhoni for sure,” Jadeja said while revealing his retentions for CSK on JioCinema. “There’s no doubt about that, especially because he’s now an uncapped player. He’s done a lot for the team and has no desire to be treated as the No. 1 player on the squad. His value is unquestioned.”

“Ruturaj Gaikwad is the captain, and he’s had a good year, so you’ll hope to retain him as well. Ravindra Jadeja can’t be left out either, so these three, I think, are perfect for them,” he added.

Aakash Chopra agrees but thinks CSK won’t retain more than four players.

“I don’t think they’ll (CSK) retain five players,” Chopra said. “They might go for 3-4. I see two players worth 18 crore in Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja. If you want to keep them, you have to match that price.”

Chopra believes that if allrounder Shivam Dube is released, he could secure a lucrative contract during the mega auction.

“Other than that, they have MS Dhoni, Shivam Dube, and Matheesha Pathirana. I think they’ll keep Dube and use the RTM card for Deepak Chahar, maybe, depending on his fitness. The price for these players is really high, so the RTM card could be useful to get players for cheaper. If Dube is sold in the auction, he might fetch over 10 or 11 crore,” he said.
