Mohammed Siraj and Umran Malik will miss the first round of the Duleep Trophy due to illness. Navdeep Saini has been called to replace Siraj in the India B squad. At the same time, Gaurav Yadav steps in to replace Malik in the India C squad.
Ravindra Jadeja has also been removed from the India B squad. However, the reason for his departure hasn’t been specified, and no replacement has been announced.
Gaurav Yadav, a 32-year-old fast bowler from Madhya Pradesh who recently moved to Puducherry, made a significant impact last season. He took 41 wickets in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy, finishing second on the list. His performance included five five-wicket hauls and a ten-wicket match haul. He consistently performed well in previous seasons, taking 24 wickets in 2022-23, 23 in 2021-22, and 23 in 2019-20. Since his first-class debut in November 2012, he has played 37 matches and taken 141 wickets.
Injury-prone Navdeep Saini, who played two Tests during India’s 2020-21 tour of Australia, has another chance to impress selectors before the upcoming Test season. Last year, he played in two India A four-day games but struggled, taking only one wicket across four innings.
As noted by the BCCI, Nitish Kumar Reddy’s participation in the Duleep Trophy remains uncertain due to his ongoing recovery from sports hernia surgery.
The first round of the Duleep Trophy will take place in Anantapur and Bengaluru starting September 5. The competition, which used to feature teams from different zones, will now have four teams. The second round will overlap with the Test series against Bangladesh beginning September 19. Test players will be replaced in the Duleep Trophy if needed.

In a rain-affected final T20I, the West Indies defeated South Africa by eight wickets using the DLS method. The West Indies scored 116 for 2 with contributions from Shai Hope (42*), Nicholas Pooran (35), and Shimron Hetmyer (31*). South Africa, who managed 108 for 4, struggled with significant individual performances, with Tristan Stubbs being the top scorer with 40 runs.
The match was delayed by rain, starting an hour late, and a further weather interruption in the fifth over reduced the game to 13 overs per side. South Africa’s innings were held by West Indies spinners Akeal Hosein and Roston Chase, who combined to give away just 22 runs in five overs. This win gave the West Indies a 3-0 series sweep, highlighting their dominance over South Africa in T20Is, having won eight out of their last ten encounters, including two consecutive 3-0 series victories.
Early in the match, South Africa struggled as Bjorn Fortuin dismissed Alick Athanaze in the first over. However, the West Indies quickly took control. Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran combined for a quick 58-run standoff just 20 balls for the second wicket, setting the stage for victory. Hope and Shimron Hetmyer assembled an unbeaten 56-run partnership, finishing the match with 22 balls to spare.
Romario Shepherd played a key role, becoming the top wicket-taker of the series by taking two crucial wickets in his first over. He struck on his first ball, dismissing Aiden Markram, who edged the ball to the keeper. Shepherd’s second wicket came three balls later when his slower delivery caught Ryan Rickelton at mid-off. This double-strike reduced South Africa from 61 for 1 to 66 for 3, leaving them with 20 balls to chase their target.
Tristan Stubbs capped off the T20I series as the top run-scorer, showcasing impressive maturity and skill. Following his first Test half-century in Trinidad earlier this month, Stubbs significantly impacted the series finale. With South Africa needing quick runs, Stubbs faced West Indies’ senior seamer Obed McCoy in his first over of the series.
Stubbs, having faced only four deliveries, quickly made his mark. He hit McCoy for a six over backward square leg, then drove a whole ball through cover for four and blasted a short ball over deep midwicket for a massive 101-meter six. He scored 16 runs off just three balls and ended his innings with 40 off 15 balls. His aggressive batting helped South Africa reach a competitive total, surpassing 100 runs.
Kwena Maphaka’s IPL debut was a challenging introduction, as he conceded 66 runs in four overs, the highest figures for a debutant. His struggles continued in his third international match in six days. In the third over of the rain-shortened chase, Maphaka began with a comprehensive, full delivery that had to be re-bowled. His next ball, delivered at 141kph, allowed Nicholas Pooran to score a single, bringing Shai Hope to the strike.
Hope took advantage of Maphaka’s short balls, hitting consecutive sixes over the leg side. Maphaka tried to adjust with a slower ball but struggled to contain the over. He also bowled a no-ball and a wide, and Pooran hit another six off his final delivery of the over. Maphaka’s first over ended with 22 runs conceded, putting West Indies in a strong position for the chase.
In his first T20I of the year, Shimron Hetmyer quickly found his rhythm. After taking seven balls to hit his first boundary off Lizaad Williams’ delivery, Hetmyer started scoring freely. He pulled a short ball from Kwena Maphaka over a long leg for six, then hit Ottneil Baartman for consecutive fours through mid-off and backward point. He ended the over with another four over fine leg.
Hetmyer, alongside Shai Hope, formed a crucial half-century partnership. He scored 31 runs off 17 balls, helping West Indies finish their innings with a strong performance.
