The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council has announced new rules and policies for the 2025 IPL mega-auction, with notable changes impacting player retentions. One key update is the introduction of a new rule for veteran Indian players, similar to the existing rule for uncapped players.
According to the official release, an Indian player who has not played in the starting XI of an international match (Test, ODI, or T20I) for the last five years or does not have a BCCI central contract will be considered “uncapped.” This rule only applies to Indian players.
The veteran Indian spinner has been part of the IPL since its first season in 2008. His last international appearance was in December 2012, which makes him eligible to be retained as an uncapped player. However, with Mumbai Indians having other key talents to consider, retaining Piyush Chawla might not be a top priority for the team.
The former CSK pacer, now with Gujarat Titans, has regained his form and played a key role in their title-winning campaign in 2022. Since his last international appearance was in 2015, he qualifies to be retained as an uncapped player. However, the Titans may prioritize retaining stars like Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Rashid Khan, and David Miller before considering the veteran fast bowler.

The specialist fast bowler for Rajasthan Royals has established himself as a dependable option for captain Sanju Samson in all aspects of the bowling innings. As the team’s leading bowler in the death overs, the Royals might consider retaining him, especially since he has only played in two T20 internationals, with his last appearance in 2015.
When the retention rule was announced, many immediately thought of this player. The five-time champions will be glad to know they can potentially retain their former skipper at a reasonable price. However, it ultimately depends on him to assess whether he can handle the physical demands of a demanding season, especially with ongoing concerns about his knee injuries. Dhoni last played an international match in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, which makes him eligible for retention by CSK.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the retention rules for IPL 2025 on X (formerly Twitter). Each of the 10 teams can retain up to six players, including at least one uncapped player. Notably, there’s an interesting update regarding the uncapped player rule.
“A capped Indian player will become uncapped if the player has, in the last five calendar years preceding the year in which the relevant season is held, not played in the starting XI in international cricket (Test match, ODI, Twenty20 International) or does not have a central contract with BCCI. This will be applicable for Indian players only.”
The new rule allows former Indian captain and legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni to be considered an uncapped player, enabling Chennai Super Kings to retain him for ₹4 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. With these retention rules in place, it seems almost certain that Dhoni will be back in action next year.
Following the announcement of the IPL retention rules, a video featuring Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders, went viral. In the video, when filmmaker Karan Johar teased him about retirement during an awards show, Khan jokingly referred to Dhoni, saying that both he and Dhoni are legends who, even after announcing their retirements, might continue to play for another decade.
“The biggest thing about legends… unki khasiyat ye hoti hai ki legends ko maalum hota hai, when to stop, when to retire. Like the great Sachin Tendulkar, like Sunil Chhetri—the footballer, like Roger Federer—the great tennis star. They all know when to retire, and I think it’s time you did too. So please go back. Thank you very much,” Shah Rukh said to Johar.
“By that standard, aur us hisab se aap kyon retire nahi hote,” Johar replied, to which Shah Rukh added, “Actually main doosre kisam ka legendary hoon. Main aur Dhoni ek kisam ke legends hai. Na na kar ke bhi 10 baar IPL khel jaate hai.”
After Shah Rukh’s statement caught everyone’s attention, Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal, who was also present at the event, added that “retirement is for legends. Kings are forever.”
Shah Rukh is the co-owner of KKR in IPL, and his team won the 2024 edition of the cash-rich league by getting the better of Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets in the final played at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 26.
